Usui Sadamitsu

A descendant of the Taira Clan who lived during the early Heian Period of Japan. Said to initially be a wild boy who lived amongst the mountains, he was eventually recruited by Minamoto-no-Raikou as one of her Four Heavenly Kings, becoming the representative of the Black Tortoise Genbu. However, he later renounced this honor after the Mt. Ooe incident and took on the role of a priest, which is why he also qualifies for the Caster class.    As a Servant summoned under the FATE system, his personality differs depending on his Ascension level, as this incarnation incorporates aspects from all points of his life. In his first two Ascensions (which depict him as a member of Raikou's Heavenly Kings), he is a bright-eyed idealist who wholeheartedly believes that every being can be saved irrespective of their circumstances, and that someday even the bridges between humans and oni can be crossed. In his third Ascension (which depicts him during his time as a priest), he has become slightly more jaded while still maintaining his pledge to save all that he can. Juuichimen Shinju - Akuninshouki

A technique that encapsulates how, with the divine aid of Ekādaśamukha (the Eleven-Faced Avalokiteśvara), Usui Sadamitsu purged the poisonous serpent of Usui Pass. Its name stems from a variation of the powerful Eleven-Faced Avalokitesvara Heart Dharani Sutra and an idiom that roughly translates to "sinners also have the opportunity to go to heaven".    In essence, this Noble Phantasm is an offensive application of the Hebikiri's purification abilities, in that the opponent's impurities are weaponized against them. Once this Noble Phantasm is activated, Lancer unleashes a deluge of strikes around the opponent, surrounding them with water which he promptly freezes over. Once they have been fully encased in ice (trapping the miasma from within), Lancer invokes Ekādaśamukha to bless him against evil before piercing through them one last time, fully purging their corruption— and them with it.

Usui Hebikiri

A consecrated spear wielded by Usui Sadamitsu as one of Minamoto-no-Yorimitsu's Four Heavenly Kings. Its initial form was that of an ordinary left by Sadamitsu's father after his death, but it later transformed into the Hebikiri (Snake Killer) after he invoked Ekādaśamukha in the fight against the Usui Pass Serpent. However, Sadamitsu would later forsake it after the Mt. Ooe incident, which he left behind alongside his status as one of the Four Heavenly Kings.    Given that it has been blessed by a bodhisattva for the sole purpose of purifying that which has been corrupted, the spear boasts a conceptual advantage against existences that have been tainted in some shape or form. While it is not dissimilar to the Holy Church's Baptism Sacraments in that it can instantly vanquish lower wraiths, it is unique in that it is also capable of removing their grudges completely (removing their need to haunt the living). This effect is even enough to partially purify Servants that have been tainted by the Holy Grail's Mud or the Hasshoujin Heroic Spirits summoned by Ashiya Douman, though not enough to undo the process without prolonged contact.

Though it is rare, certain Servants possess the capability to be summoned at multiple points in their life due to how distinct they are between these two points in time. In certain cases, these versions of a given Servant are so different from each other that if they were to meet, they may consider each other to be different people entirely. Usui Sadamitsu happens to be one of these Servants, where the two forms he can be summoned as are split between the time before and after he participated in the massacre of Mt. Ooe's oni.    When Sadamitsu formally became one of Minamoto-no-Raikou's retainers, he swore an additional oath to save as many people as he could, whether they were human or oni. He upheld his duty as Gatekeeper to the best of his ability, protecting the people of Kyo and slaying monsters that threatened to breach the city gates.    However, he started to falter. With each kill, each dead body that laid at his feet, the warrior named Usui Sadamitsu believed less and less in the vow he had taken. The mountain witch Yamauba, the tsuchigumo, that snake- how many more would he have to slaughter before Kyoto knew peace? He knew that it was for the greater good, of course. Left unchecked, these monsters would surely cause more death than if he were to cut them down where they stood, and yet their deaths still wounded him. Perhaps it was due to his lineage being caught between two worlds (those of the mortal and the divine), but his sincerest wish was that someday, there would be a place where humans and oni could coexist.    His greatest mistake would come on the night before Minamoto-no-Yorimitsu launched her assault on Mt. Ooe, the fortress where the oni who terrorized Kyoto dwelt. In preparation for the battle to come, Sadamitsu prayed to Sumiyoshi with an offering of pure water, which transformed itself into a certain Divine Wine in response to his wishes. Later, it would be used to deceive Shuten-douji and her retinue, with the final result being the total extermination of Mt. Ooe's oni. Wracked with despair over the atrocities he willingly partook in, Sadamitsu renounced his status as one of Raikou's Four Heavenly Kings, stuck his spear in the ground, and vowed to never pick up a weapon again.    After leaving Kyoto, Sadamitsu would become a wandering priest, purifying monsters and healing travelers as penance for his transgressions. He would eventually return home in Gunma Prefecture and founded the Usuizan Kongo-ji, which would ultimately serve as his final resting place. Despite being the second youngest of the Four Heavenly Kings, Sadamitsu was the first to pass despite his years away from the battlefield.

Didn't expect to see me again, did you?    It's been a while, but I'm trying to get back into the swing of things. Sadamitsu here was supposed to be a sort of warmup (even though he took around a month to write...) for a super secret future project of mine, and I guess it lined up nicely since I've always wanted to try making him and Urabe but never really dug into their rather sparse lore. Frankly, Sadamitsu's only known for two things (killing the Usui Pass serpent and the Shima Onsen thing) so I ended up extrapolating a lot when it came to lore (there's like one claim that he had a title indicating he was a priest, so I ran with that). I do feel that he encroaches on my Katsunaga and Gaheris a bit in terms of his style and how he views the world, but in the end, I think he treads the boundary just enough to be his own entity.    Sadamitsu's character primarily revolves around his wish to have all beings find salvation, no matter how wicked they might be, and how he is told that that wish is frankly unattainable. This put a lot of strain on him as a Heavenly King, not just on his physical and mental capabilities, but also amongst his brothers given Tsuna's apathy towards oni-kind and Urabe's heartless view regarding lives, where he eventually reached his breaking point at Mt. Ooe and left. As a Servant, he'd ne devastated by the knowledge that the Taira (his home clan) and the Minamoto would destroy each other when they were comrades-in-arms not a generation prior. After being summoned to Chaldea, he find that it was the proof that he had sought for so long, as it is a space where both humans and oni united against a greater threat.    As for Caster Sadamitsu, I'd imagine that his skills would be Martyr's Soul, Shamanism, and Waters of Shima Onsen again, since at the end of the day it's first and foremost a non-combative ability. His Noble Phantasm would still be called Juuichimen Shinju - Akuninshouki, but instead of it being a spear strike, Sadamitsu chants the actual Ekadaśamukha-sūtra in order to purify the target. I don't imagine that he'd be a common summon (compared to his Lancer and Rider versions, at least), but hey, it's an option if you're in the market for jaded 40-somethings.
